Our Mission and Vision

The Aperture Science Enrichment Institute is a Mutant Vehicle support camp. This is “theme camp adjacent” but you don’t necessarily have to have public events. Your vehicle is your public event. We may, however; it depends on funding and schedules. The camp supports two mutant vehicles, the Steampunk Weighted Companion Cube, and the Weighted Companion Cube. If you know the game “Portal” and “Portal 2” you know. If you don’t, they are just cool three foot lit cubes. They also have sound effects and usually play the Portal song.

Dedicated to pushing the boundaries of scientific exploration and artistic expression. Our mission is to foster a community of curious minds and creative spirits, united by a passion for discovery and innovation. We value collaboration, inclusivity, and the relentless pursuit of knowledge. Join us as we redefine the possibilities of science and art in the heart of the desert.

Understanding the Ten Principles

The Burning Man Ten Principles are the foundation of our camp’s values and activities. These principles guide us in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment at the Aperture Science Enrichment Institute. They emphasize radical inclusion, self-reliance, and communal effort, which are integral to our mission at Burning Man.

Radical Inclusion

Anyone may be a part of Burning Man. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community.

Our camp embraces radical inclusion by welcoming people from all walks of life. We believe in creating a space where everyone feels accepted and valued, regardless of their background or beliefs. While we prefer Portal, Fallout, Half Life, or other game fans, we absolutely do not require it.

Decommodification

Yes, some of our content comes from commodities; Valve and Bethesda obviously profit from sales of their games. We do not, nor will we sell or barter for anything at the event (see: Gifting)

In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the substitution of consumption for participatory experience.

Gifting

Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.

The Camp Lead’s gift is the admin required to bring a theme camp to Burning Man, a 10×30 shade structure, and two mutant vehicles.

Your mileage may vary, but you should consider, bring, and support gift of something theme camp related. This could be as simple as booze, it could be as complex as Mutant Vehicles. We don’t rate contributions; that’s why it’s gifting, not barter.

Radical Self-reliance

Participants are encouraged to rely on their inner resources and capabilities. This principle fosters personal growth and independence within our camp community.

We have had first year burners that – despite coaching and references – expect camps to provide water, utensils, bicycle chargers, and services. This is not being self-reliant. Please take care of yourself.

Communal Effort

Collaboration and cooperation are key to our camp’s success. We work together to build a supportive and vibrant community at Burning Man.

Our community values creative cooperation and collaboration. We strive to produce, promote and protect on-site social networks, public spaces, works of art, and methods of communication that support such interaction (Tie in: Immediacy; Civic Responsibility)

Radical Self-expression

We celebrate individuality and creativity. Our camp provides a platform for members to express themselves in unique and meaningful ways.

Radical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than the individual or a collaborating group can determine its content. It is offered as a gift to others. In this spirit, the giver should respect the rights and liberties of the recipient.

Yes, we’d love it if you had a Fallout outfit, acted as an acolyte to the Agnostic Pope (if he even exists), or joined the Open Source Weighted Companion Cube project, but you do not have to. Express yourself how you feel most comfortable.

Civic Responsibility

We value civil society. Community members who organize events should assume responsibility for public welfare and endeavor to communicate civic responsibilities to participants. They must also assume responsibility for conducting events in accordance with local, state and federal laws.

Civic Responsibility also involves gifting, of time and responsibility. Keep the Porto’s clean; don’t steal TP, when you see MOOP (LNT), pick it up, and help neighbors if they need it.

We’re a family.

Leaving No Trace

Our community respects the environment. We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather. We clean up after ourselves and endeavor, whenever possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found them.

If you create gray water, pack it out. Don’t throw it in the Porto’s; be self-reliant.

Participation

Our community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that transformative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to work. Everyone is invited to play. We make the world real through actions that open the heart.

Participation takes many forms. If you want to use use our location near center camp as a stopping off place, you’re welcome to do so, but then you need to participate with other forms of support.

Immediacy

Immediate experience is, in many ways, the most important touchstone of value in our culture. We seek to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of our inner selves, the reality of those around us, participation in society, and contact with a natural world exceeding human powers. No idea can substitute for this experience.

Don’t blog, don’t record the experience so you can watch it later, don’t go into your tent and watch videos for three hours (we had to increase our bandwidth last year by 100GB); you came here for a reason. Experience it.

Consent - the 11th principle

Consent is the 11th principle;

The Enrichment.Institute has been accepted to the BEDucator program via the Beaurea of Erotic Discourse – bedtalks.org

It should be a principle everywhere, of course, but sadly it has to be mentioned. (What’s next, having a 12th principle not to murder? This is how off the rails the “Manosphere” is – and the author is a man!)
